Counting down to midnight, wherever you are
This countdown reaches zero at 12:00 a.m. on January 1 in the time zone your device uses, then celebrates with fireworks and “Happy New Year!”. On New Year’s Day it keeps showing the celebration, and from January 2 it switches to the next New Year automatically.
The new year doesn’t arrive everywhere at once. Kiritimati (Christmas Island) in Kiribati, at UTC+14, is the first inhabited place to reach midnight. Places at UTC−11, such as American Samoa and Niue, are among the last, about a full day later. If your friends are spread across the world, send them the address of this page: each of them sees the countdown to their own midnight. A copied countdown link, on the other hand, counts down to midnight in your time zone.
Count down to midnight in another city
Watching the ball drop in New York from somewhere else, or celebrating with family in another country? Choose Customize this countdown and pick a time zone in the builder. The countdown then runs to midnight in that city for everyone who opens your link.
Ideas for New Year’s Eve
- Party screen: open the countdown full screen on a TV or projector. The final seconds are big and easy to read from across the room.
- Livestreams: add it to OBS as a browser source with a transparent background so it sits on top of your stream.
- Invitations: put the live countdown in a Canva invite or a Notion event page.
- Group chats: share this page’s address, and it adjusts to each person’s time zone.
Links you copy from this page repeat every year: after the fireworks they start counting to the following New Year, so you can reuse the same link next December.
Step-by-step guides: Canva, Notion, OBS, or your own website.
